Exposure to Primary Care is an essential component of our educational program that is relevant to all residents whether they ultimately pursue careers in Primary Care, Hospital Medicine, or subspecialty practice. We support three Med-Peds clinic sites in the community, located offsite from our main medical campus. Each site is a fully integrated Med-Peds practice staffed by Med-Peds trained faculty. Our residents attend continuity clinic one to two half-days per week, depending on rotation schedules. Additional opportunities for even more in depth Primary Care experiences will develop as our Primary Care Path of Excellence is implemented during the coming years. To further enhance the residents’ education in Primary Care, we have developed a Med-Peds ambulatory curriculum consistent across our clinic sites disseminated through small-group case conferences twice per month.
As part of their educational experience, residents develop their own patient panels, which allows for independence and continuity of care. Residents are exposed to a variety of patient visits including preventive care, well-child exams, acute sick visits, and management of chronic illness in adults and children. Our practices serve our local communities to provide care for patients from diverse array of socio-economic, racial and cultural backgrounds. Faculty support for our residents is extraordinary and provides opportunities not simply to learn outstanding clinical care, but to develop an understanding of local and community resources to promote the health of our patients more broadly. In addition, each site has resources to provide multidisciplinary care, including important services such as Nutrition and Social Work.
